His mother, Elsie, politely offered them sandwiches – which they took away, uneaten, as souvenirs. In the early days of Beatlemania, Ringo Starr’s house was surrounded by fans 24 hours a day. Though he inevitably covers some well-trodden territory, much of the detail is poignant and entertaining. John Higgs, however, had the intriguing idea of exploring their creation, development and afterlives in parallel. No one could have predicted that we would still be thrilled by the band’s music six decades later, or that the film franchise would still be going strong. Humpty spent the majority of his stretch reading: Herbert Spencer, Thomas Paine, Darwin, Voltaire, and Huxley. Jackson pulled a hidden revolver and beamed four shots at Detective Ed Reardon, those shots would earn Humpty 2 ½ years in Sing Sing where the hunchback was treated to a regimen of: “Twelve hours a day in solitary…paddling, and thumb hanging exercises…” However, his time in the can wasn’t all bad. They returned fire with their service revolvers and roaring gun battle erupted.įrom the tenements, bricks and potted plants and bottles rained down on the police. Suddenly an army of 30 mobsters appeared on 11 th Street, a pistol shot rang out and the cops ducked for cover. The small army of cops put the collar on Humpty Jackson, the Riley Brothers, and William Noble and marched them back to the precinct. McDermott raced to the cemetery with five plainclothesmen, Detective Ed Reardon, and a team of reservists. Seeing an opportunity to put Jackson away for good, Capt. Keller broke away and sprinted to the Police precinct on 5 th Street. A fist fight broke out, and one of Humpty’s goons put a revolver to Keller’s head and pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired. The remains of the 11th Catholic Cemetery today. The gangsters sat up and took notice after they spied Fredrick Keller, a former member of the gang, strolling down 11 th Street. That night Humpty and his pals were lounging on the headstones in their graveyard hangout. The tipping point came on the night of September 12, 1904. According to the newspapers, every mugging, shooting, and petty theft in the district was the work of the Humpty Jackson gang. Smack a couple of Republican ballot watchers over and swipe the boxes and throw them in the river.”Īrmed robbery, assault, and vagrancy charges disappeared like magic courtesy of Tammany Hall, and with political backing, Jackson carved out a fiefdom strong enough to repel both Monk Eastman and Paul Kelly’s Five Points Gang. Humpty later bragged to Collier’s Magazine: Repeat voting, ballot box stuffing, and good old Republican slugging, granted Humpty a license to steal. With the help of Big Tim Sullivan, Humpty was soon stumping for Tammany Hall. The veteran election rigger immediately saw potential in the young hunchback. Election Rigging 101: Tammany Hall Recruits Jackson Tammany Boss Silent Charlie Murphy employed Jackson as a key election rigger. Thanks for this topic, it brought up so many great memories some of the best memories of my life! ![]() Eventually I lost interests in this "scene" hobby and ended up doing more serious graphics and music. Oh man I really miss the headache Assembly and C gave me. These scene groups have their own IRC chat channels, it's really hard to join them but I heard some rumors that on some channels the feds had infiltrated, thank God I never joined any chat channel with an exception to see if some application was already released or not. Unfortunately I can't post anything related to that stuff here since those 0day groups are still active today. Not so long ago I had found a YouTube video with my chiptune in it, it was hillarious since I "wrote" and composed that tune many years ago. Game hacking was even way worse, trying to figure out why your hack does work in the debugger but not in the trainer. Oh man the memories, staying awake till the next day just to crack some application before some other group pre'd it just to find out that it got nuked because the crack of the rival group was smaller. I had done some chiptunes, logos and a few keygen/patcher/trainer skins when I was in the PC scene. I really really loved the 4 channel mono amiga chiptune music, cracktro's, intro's, trainers. It might sound weird but cracking and gamehacking I enjoyed more than making music on these trackers. Trying to literally "write" your samples, tuning them was a pain in the ass, playing with the arps which always was effect X4X, vibrato was I believe X6X. I was a cracker/keygenner/gamehacker but I had a great time playing with ProTracker and Fasttracker. I used to be a part of a few 0day cracking/demoscene groups. I wouldn't even recommend a x0x interface if you want the level of detail and speed that a tracker can provide. Even in hardware, the closest I've seen is in pseudo-random trigger sequence generation. Trackers are especially good for building complicated drum sections. If you put in the time to learn it, it becomes an instrument in its own right, and you can work faster than you thought possible. In modern trackers like OpenMPT and Renoise, most functions are a right-click away, but to take advantage of the speed that tracking is capable of, you absolutely have to put the mouse away get to know the keyboard shortcuts. Like with ZTracker, the only time I'm using the mouse is for saving and loading files. Not only is it used for entering notes like a synth keyboard, but keyboard shortcuts are pretty much the soul of the tracker experience. You have to keep in mind that it was developed in the early days of computing as a way to work with the limited hardware available at the time, so where it took on a life of its own was in its use of the computer keyboard. Fair warning though: The tracker interface isn't for everybody. Renoise is an excellent one with a lot of depth, and the free version can do everything the full version can except for Rewire support and rendering to. It's grown up pretty well over the years and even has VST support these days. Is there a good $free Tracker I can DL, with some comprehensive demo songs that really make use of what it's particularly good for, that will give me a good dose of This Is What They're All About in a day or a week?ModPlug (Now OpenMPT) is a really good one. I may not have ever even looked at one in person, not that I recall at least, which seems a little weird since I've used DAW-ish things since the early 90s. ![]() Similar types of ads also don’t usually have a good reason for the subject of the ad to be coming out the front- what is it moving towards? Those familiar with The Peanuts series of comics and cartoon shorts though will recognize this billboard as a small recreation of one of the more famous strips. While most other “crashing through the billboard” ads simply stick out the front of a thing, this one goes a step further and actually makes it appear to destroy the ad. Thus, the concept of making a giant ad out of a small commonplace object does well to capitalize on this idea. This concept is used frequently in film and many amusement parks to great measure. When we end up seeing something that isn’t the size we’ve come to expect, it invokes a sense of wonder and giddy. There’s a certain magic about big things that shouldn’t be big and small things that shouldn’t be small. While the visual interest and excitement of something approaching the audience is still there, the horse, night, and fantasy environment aren’t something people are as used to seeing and make it stand out. A horse however is a new spin on the old formula. GalavantĬars and planes “breaking through” the billboard are a commonly recurring theme when you look at many 3D billboards. The majority of the ad is actually in the cigarette butt itself- the sign conveys the information it needs to convey but the eye is naturally drawn to the cigarette due to the contrasting light color compared to the billboard. It seems like a lot more is going on here thanks to the 3D cigarette butt under the sign, but this billboard is the picture of simplicity. If one were to take a moment to really look at the actual graphics of the billboard, they would quickly realize that it is comprised entirely of some plain text on top of a colored background. Compared to lavish and impressive set pieces on some of the other billboards, this ad’s simplicity shows that creating an effective 3D billboard doesn’t necessarily require a huge budget. ![]() HairclubĬompared to some of the other selections on our list, this ad doesn’t necessarily push the boundaries of what can be done with 3D billboards. The fact that they were able to coordinate this level of cross promotion not just once, but multiple times, is astounding. It doesn’t stop here though, Donatos has actually teamed up to do similar ads for their pizza with other brands. When two advertisements end up crossing paths like this the result is an unusual but unique synergy which ends up benefitting. Consumers are used to advertisements competing with each other, each in their own little separate pieces of the world. The most impressive part of this billboard is the fact that they’ve actually teamed up with another advertisement. ![]() Here are some of the best and most creative examples of 3D billboards from a variety of companies and industries. Billboards offer advantages and freedom that other mediums such as banner ads won’t be able to compete with. Especially in our era of digital media, advertisements which utilizes real-life 3D space are often overlooked by creative agencies.
